C.A.R.E. Board of Directors

Paul V. Schultes II
President and Co-Founder

Picture
Paul (Redwing) has been involved in the aquarium hobby for most of his life. He has had terrariums, herpariums, and freshwater aquariums too. He began keeping marine aquariums 13+ years ago.

Paul enjoys teaching and helping others in the marine aquarium hobby.  He does not only help with the "how to", but also the responsibilities of reef keeping and best practices as a ecologically sound reef keeper.

As a reef keeper, he gets lots of practice using his professional photography background with not only his own systems, but by helping other aquarists use their own cameras to take the best pictures possible.

Paul is currently a project manager at Purestream, Inc. He is responsible for the design and manufacturing of wastewater treatment facilities. He helps keep our rivers, lakes, and oceans clean from man made waste. Paul and his wife have three children and one grandbaby.

Paul's newest endeavor in the aquarium hobby is planted tanks. He keeps his hands wet and his thumbs green.

Ricky Turner
Vice-President and Co-Founder

Picture
Ricky (discus513) has been in the aquarium hobby for 12 years. His first several years were dedicated to freshwater. Having a bad case of MTS (multi-tank syndrome) at one time he had 36 freshwater tanks running in his basement fish room. He has bred close to 100 different species of freshwater fish from plecos to discus and many cichlids from lake Tanganyika and Malawi.

Ricky began his saltwater endeavors in 2009 because of a homeless fish and it has only expanded. He sold most of the freshwater equipment and livestock to pursue his saltwater addiction.

He currently has a lower case of MTS, but still has 5 saltwater tanks set up in his home. He hopes to get down to one large system when he gets into a new house.

Ricky belongs to most local clubs and can be found at most reef keeping events and frag swaps. He loves picking up new coral or fish for his systems. Ricky is married to his best friend and has three wonderful children. The entire family enjoys the aquariums. Ricky also coaches baseball in the summertime. When he has the time, his family and him can be found camping, fishing, hunting, or taking rides on his motorcycle. Although he was born in Ohio he has been a UK basketball fan since diapers "I bleed blue".

Besides co-founding C.A.R.E. and working as the vice president, Ricky has also dedicated 12 years of loyalty to his job at ... as...

Denise Hore
Treasurer and Co-Founder

Picture
Denise (Denise210g) began her love of marine life as a very young child, inspired by her encounter with Beluga whales at the Minnesota Zoo. For many years she wanted to become a marine biologist or veterinarian.  However, life happens and she graduated university with a degree in accounting while working with Ernst and Young LLC. She continued with her financial management career working for General Mills. Eventually, this path led her to Cincinnati.

After meeting her husband and choosing to stay in Cincinnati, she went back to school to get a Veterinary Technician degree. Graduating in 2002, she worked as a licensed vet tech until 9 months after her first son was born.

Denise had dabbled in saltwater during college with a small fish only system. Although never really beginning with freshwater, she did have aquariums growing up. This desire to begin a marine system again, was gaining ground. However, convincing her husband was the tricky part.

In 2003, after a trip to Hawaii with her husband and 6 month old son, she finally got her husband on her side and began a reef system. She kept a 28g JBJ cube for three years prior to making the plunge into her 210g display. "Keeping a small system stable and well maintained makes a large system seem much easier."

To keep herself from going crazy, now being a stay at home mother of three, she began volunteering with WAVE at Newport Aquarium in 2011. She works with the husbandry staff and the veterinary staff on a regular basis.

Wanting to share her love of coral reefs and the animals and creatures that live there with everyone, she began a project to bring a reef tank into classrooms. Because she wanted to make this endeavor available for public schools without cost, she incorporated her idea into C.A.R.E. She wanted to make a difference in kids lives and help educate everyone on coral reefs. Helping co-found care was the beginning of a new adventure for Denise and she looks forward to C.A.R.E.'s future with enthusiasm.

Chris Dexter
Director of Activities

Picture
Chris (Dextereef) has been a reef tank hobbyist since 2007. However, he has been an aquarist since his 8th birthday when he was given his first freshwater system.

Chris has worked with nano reefs and currently has a 120 gallon mixed reef with an attached 21 gallon frag system.

Always a tinkerer and a self-diagnosed "reef junkie", the next build or system addition is always on the horizon. Chris loves to help other reef keepers should they need help or advice on their systems. He took this desire to help others to the next level when he was invited to become C.A.R.E.'s Director of Activities at the end of 2014.

Besides being on the board of C.A.R.E., Chris is also a financial adviser for Trinity Wealth Management and owns a firearms business. When given time between work and reef keeping, Chris loves to spend time with his wife and two sons.

Although life is super busy, Chris sticks to the adage of Biologist-Darwinist, Thomas Henry Huxley - "Try to know something about everything and everything about something."

Chris also gives credit to his successes to his wife's patience and support.

If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact us (care4reefs@gmail.com or 513-237-4167). We are always looking for new ideas and volunteers. Thank you.
